Martin Mkhize is a member of the opera studio at Cape Town Opera for the 2017/18 season, where he will be appearing as Papageno in The Magic Flute in November. The baritone studied at the University of Cape Town from 2014 to 2017. He made his debut back in 2011, singing the role of Betto di Signa in Gianni Schicchi. During his studies he also appeared as Don Prudenzio (Il viaggio a Reims), Marchese d’Obigny (La traviata) and took the title role in The Marriage of Figaro. In 2015 he sang the role of Nsimane in the opera Blood of Mine by the South African composer Sibusiso Njeza. In the following year he appeared in Mozart’s Don Giovanni as part of the Darling Music Experience. In April 2017 he went on tour in Germany and the Netherlands with African Angels, a concert production by Cape Town Opera. Recently he appeared as Dandini in La Cenerentola in a production by the University of Cape Town Opera School. In 2016 he won First Prize and Audience Prize in the Shock Music Foundation Competition.
