Biographie

Siyabonga Maqungo has been a member of the Meiningen State Theatre ensemble since the 2015/16 season. He appeared there as Alfred in Die Fledermaus, Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville and David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. In the 2017/2018 season he will sing the roles of Normanno in Lucia di Lammermoor, Ferrando in Mozart’s Così fan tutte and Brighella in Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos. Siyabonga was born in Soweto and studied at North-West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa from 2009 to 2013. From 2014 to 2016 he studied for a Master’s degree at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne. He made his debut in Germany as Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore. In summer 2017 Siyabonga appeared as Tamino in the Oper Burg Gars production of The Magic Flute. In his native South Africa he often performs as a soloist in oratorios and masses by Bach, Handel and Mozart.
