Working with everyone else. A pianist, musicians from the orchestra, stage director, conductor or
other singers. The special thing about being a singer is that it is always a collaboration. It sets us
apart from instrumental soloists, we never stand there alone. When things come together and you’re
making music with other people - that’s when the fun starts.
To entertain and connect with the audience, to be relatable. I think as artists we are often told (and
often tell ourselves) that there are these grand missions to accomplish artistically, these important
messages - be it a political statement or reflecting and criticising society, tackling social issues,
changing someone’s life. I think it’s true that opera can sometimes do this but it’s more than okay
not to reach this goal every night. The most important thing is that the people coming to see you
have a good time and some sort of emotional reaction to what you’re doing - positive or negative. To
me this means portraying a character and emotions that are relatable and move people. There’s
nothing more special than someone telling me they had a great time and I made their day/evening. I
don’t (always) need to change their life.
Depends who I’m with but usually a night in! Sounds cringy but the older I get, the more I appreciate
my PJs and being on the sofa with nothing to do and no one to impress. Sometimes I have to force
myself to have a night out so I don’t go completely boring and end up moving to the woods by the
time I turn 30 ;)
