Video Auditions

In your online application, you must upload video recordings of two opera arias. The following rules apply to the selection of these arias:

  • Both arias must be opera, but from two different operas

  • Both arias must represent contrasting musical styles

  • Both arias must be sung in different languages, always the original language as written

  • Both arias must be sung in the original keys as written

  • Both arias must represent the same voice type/ fach

  • Both arias must be sung completely, if applicable with the accompanying recitative

  • Both arias must be sung from memory

 

The arias may be taken from the compulsory repertoire of the competition, but it is not a requirement!

Live auditions

In your online application you also need to indicate five arias for your live audition. These arias must be taken from our compulsory repertoire. You may select already sung arias from the video audition.

Your choice: 3 + 2 = 5

 

3 arias from 3 different epochs: 

  • Epoch 1: 1600 - 1750
  • Epoch 2: 1750 – 1830
  • Epoch 3: 1830 - beginning 20th century
  • Epoch 4: 20th century

PLUS

2 arias from 2 different operas or one opera aria and one operetta aria.   

The choice of this five arias applies to live auditions and for the final round. 

How many arias will I sing?

During live auditions, each contestant performs one or two arias from the submitted repertoire. The first aria may be chosen by the singer, the second one (if requested) will be chosen by the jury.

When auditioning during the final round, up to three arias from the submitted repertoire may be performed. The first piece will be chosen by the singer, the other arias by the jury.

During the semi-final, one aria from the submitted repertoire will be performed (chosen by the jury).

During the final, two arias from the submitted repertoire will be performed (chosen by the jury).
